Low

Premiered March 2002 at The Duke on 42nd Street, New York City, presented by Dance Theater Workshop

“Sensual yet cool, this is tango in ingenious free fall.”
Deborah Jowitt
The Village Voice

Heightening the investigation of weight and the constant, dynamic interplay of exchange between partners through the constriction of space, Low unfolds sensually, spiraling subtly. The seed for this collaboration between choreographer Donna Uchizono and composer Guy Yarden, both of whom won 2002 New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) awards for the piece, was inspired by the profound experience Donna Uchizono Company had through their month long residency in Argentina, in which Uchizono created an evening-length work made in collaboration with COBAI (a coalition of independent dancers in Argentina), and the musicians of the Tobas Indian Nation, the indigenous people of Argentina.

Low premiered in March 2002 at the Duke on 42nd St presented by Dance Theater Workshop. Following performances include: The Painted Bride Art Center, PA (Nov. 2002); Pentacle Showcase, Dusseldorf, Germany (August 2002); The Joyce Theater, NYC (Jan. 2003); Dance Place, D.C. (May 2003); and Walker Arts Center, MN (May 2003).

"Low" was commissioned by the Bessie Schonberg/First Light commissioning program of New York's Dance Theater Workshop with funds from the Jerome Foundation of St. Paul, MN and the New York State Council on the Arts. “Low” was created during a residency provided by The Joyce Theater Foundation, New York City, with major support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This work was created, in part, during an Artist in Residency (2000/2001) from BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange with support from the Dance Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Challenge Program, The State and Local Partnership of NYSCA and through generous funding from J.P. Morgan. “Low” was also made possible, in part, by funding received from the Greenwall Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Donna Uchizono Company gratefully acknowledges additional funding support for “Low” from composer Guy Yarden.

“Low” was a co-commissioning project by Dance Place, Washington, DC in partnership with Dance Theater Workshop, New York, NY, Painted Bride Art Center, Philadelphia, PA and the National Performance Network Creation Fund. The Creation Fund is sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
