State of Heads

Premiered April 1999 at Dance Theater Workshop, New York City

State of Heads, with its “breathtaking” opening, explores the feeling of waiting. Waiting for a hero, waiting to see what happens. The title originated with the idea that the “Heads” of States seem to be disconnected from the “body” of the country. Initially, The Company used this image, the separation of head from the body, as a springboard from which to dive into the exploration of disjointed-ness and the passage of time in a state of hiatus, where the line between spiritual disorientation and meditative calm are blurred, surprisingly creating a strange world of endearingly odd characters.

State of Heads premiered at Dance Theater Workshop in New York City in April 1999, followed by performances at the opening of the new contemporary art museum, Museum Van Hedendaagse Kunst in Gent, Belgium. The work has subsequently been presented in Rosario, Argentina; the 2000 New York Bagnolet Platform; Temple University, Philadelphia, PA; DiverseWorks, Houston, TX; the Painted Bride Arts Center, Philadelphia, PA; Dance Place; Washington, DC; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN.

State of Heads was originally commissioned by the Bessie Schoenberg/First Light commissioning program of New York’s Dance Theater Workshop with funds from the Jerome Foundation of St. Paul, MN.
