Thin Air

Donna Uchizono's newest work, Thin Air premiered October 9-13, 2007 at Dance Theater Workshop, New York City.

Uchizono’s fascination with how our sense of reality is shaped by our perceptions is the point of departure for Thin Air, drawing source material from the Buddhist tenet of "emptiness" as well as concepts of quantum physics. Thin Air juxtaposes projected images and shifting soundscapes with the visceral power of dance's physical reality, emphasizing the emotional power of “real” physical contact and intimacy. The collaborative team features dancers Hristoula Harakas, Antonio Ramos and Julie Alexander, an original score by the iconic composer Fred Frith; video by artist Michael Casselli and lighting by Jane Shaw.

Thin Air premiered at Dance Theater Workshop, NYC, October 9-13, 2007. The work toured to the ODC Theater, San Francisco, CA, October 18-20, 2007 and is currently slated to tour to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL in Spring 2009.

Thin Air is a National Performance Network Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art in partnership with Dance Theater Workshop, ODC Theater and the National Performance Network. NPN and the NPN Creation Fund is sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Altria, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency).
